Making the Climb tells of the author, John Bowling's account of his climb to the to of Mt. Kilimanjaro. A solution evolved into a "boot print". The process involved painting mud on the sole of a hiking boot, making the impression on a large sheet, then photographing it.

To further emphasize actual mud on the cover itself, the image was embossed to raise above the cover stock.
